This is entirely self-built, and pretty much all the parts have changed over the years. There was only ever intended to be one server, but that’s not really how the hobby ends up working!
This is the powerhouse – best I can afford when I upgrade each bit. Current spec is:
– Ryzen 5 2600 CPU
– 64GB DDR 3600MHz
– RTX 3090 24GB graphics card
– 2TB NVMe boot drive (Samsung 990 PRO)
– 24TB storage drives (2x8TB+2x4TB Seagate BarraCuda 5400rpm)
It might seem overkill to put a high-end graphics card in a server, but that was bought for experiments with AI.
For stability reasons, a lot of the software on this runs as a virtual machine or as a container – both of these are ways of keeping stuff totally separate from the main machine. An ingenious idea that means if it all goes horribly wrong I can just remove it with no consequence to anything else. A powerful machine can run loads of them.
